US stocks open higher as investors try to recover from steep losses

ISTANBUL

US stocks opened higher Thursday as investors tried to recover from steep losses suffered in recent days.

The Dow Jones industrial average was up 118 points, or 0.36%, to 33,173. The S&P 500 rose 26 points, or 0.65%, to 4,017.

The Nasdaq added 93 points, or 0.81%, to 11,600 at the time.

Indices plummeted by as much as 2% in recent days as the Federal Reserve minutes showed central bank officials want to see more proof of easing inflation to make sure prices are on a falling trend.

The VIX volatility index, also known as the fear index, was down 3.7% to 21.46. The 10-year US Treasury yield, meanwhile, rose 0.06% to 3.925%.

The dollar index was up 0.02% to 104.61, while the euro added 0.05% to $1.0606 against the greenback.

Precious metals were in positive territory, with gold adding 0.04% to $1,826 an ounce and silver rising 0.33% to $21.56.

Oil prices were up around 2%, with global benchmark Brent crude at $82.12 per barrel and US benchmark West Texas Intermediate at $75.50.
