Türkiye’s natural gas imports up 21.5% in December 2024

Türkiye’s natural gas imports increased by 21.5% in December 2024, compared to the same month in 2023, according to data from Türkiye’s energy watchdog on Saturday.

Natural gas imports in December 2024 reached 7.36 billion cubic meters (bcm), up from approximately 6.06 bcm last year, Türkiye’s Energy Market Regulatory Authority (EMRA) said in its monthly natural gas market report.

In December 2024, 4.42 bcm of imports were made through pipelines and 2.93 bcm were imported via liquefied natural gas (LNG).

Russia was the largest natural gas supplier to Türkiye, providing 2.83 bcm, while Azerbaijan and Iran followed with 1.37 bcm and 552.17 million cubic meters (mcm), respectively.

During this period, 2.01 bcm of LNG were imported from the US, 346.88 mcm from Algeria, 207.74 mcm from Equatorial Guinea, 198.21 mcm from Russia, 94.74 mcm from Nigeria, and 86.32 mcm from Norway.

– Gas consumption up by 32%

The country’s total gas consumption increased to 6.96 bcm in December 2024, up by 32% compared to the same period in December 2023.

Household consumption rose by 35% to 3.71 bcm, while gas consumption in power plants increased by 87.8% to 1.39 bcm, during the same period.

The natural gas storage volume in December 2024 declined by 9% to around 4.95 bcm, compared to 5.44 bcm in the previous year.
