Türkiye’s gas imports down 1% in May

​​​​​Türkiye’s natural gas imports decreased by 1% in May compared to the same month in 2022, according to data from Türkiye’s energy watchdog on Friday.

Natural gas imports in May fell to around 3.69 billion cubic meters (bcm) from approximately 3.72 bcm in the same month of 2022, Türkiye’s Energy Market Regulatory Authority (EMRA) said in its monthly natural gas market report.

According to EMRA data, the country imported approximately 2.83 bcm of natural gas via pipelines in May, while 860 million cubic meters (mcm) were purchased as LNG. This represented a 5.05% decrease in pipeline imports and a 15.17% increase in LNG imports.

Russia was the majority supplier, providing 1.23 bcm of natural gas to Türkiye, while Azerbaijan and Iran followed with 923 mcm and 885 mcm, respectively.

Nevertheless, gas imports from Russia decreased by 28.85% in May, while imports from Iran and Azerbaijan increased by 2.7% and 35.45%, respectively, compared to the same period last year.

The country’s total gas consumption also rose by 27.7% to approximately 4.37 bcm compared to the same month in 2022.

Household consumption grew by 106% to 1.83 bcm, and the use of gas in power plants decreased by 11.17% to 999 mcm during the same period.

The natural gas storage volume in May increased by 130.7% to around 4.67 bcm, compared to 2.02 bcm in May 2022.
