Poland’s natural gas company PGNiG signed a 10-year contract with Equinor to secure up to 2.4 billion cubic meters (bcm) in annual Norwegian natural gas supplies up to Jan. 1, 2033, the company announced on Friday.
Gas purchased from Equinor will be delivered to Poland via the Baltic Pipe pipeline.
The Baltic Pipe, a joint venture between Polish and Danish gas operators Gaz-System and Energinet, will launch on Oct. 1.
When fully operational, the pipeline will carry around 10 bcm of gas annually. So far, PGNiG has reserved about 8 bcm, based on its own extraction in Norway, which this year will reach 3 bcm, and may increase to 4 bcm annually in the following years, the company said.
‘Equinor is a broad energy provider and has been a key supplier of gas to Europe for 45 years. I am very happy that through this gas sales agreement we can extend our offering as a reliable energy partner also to Poland,” Equinor’s Executive Vice President for Marketing, Midstream and Processing, Irene Rummelhoff, said.
She also relayed that Equinor is working with local companies on developing large-scale offshore wind and solar projects in Poland.
