MUNICH
Expressing concern over the prevailing humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip, the Bulgarian prime minister said on Friday that international humanitarian law should be at the center of all efforts aimed at resolving the conflict.
“There is no easy solution,” Nikolay Denkov said in response to Anadolu’s question about the situation in the besieged enclave at the Munich Security Conference. “International humanitarian law should be in the center of all the efforts to solve the challenges and issues that we have there.”
The 60th edition of the annual event started in Germany’s third-largest city on Friday, bringing together political leaders and experts from around the world.
High-level debates are expected on the world’s most pressing security challenges, especially Israeli attacks in Gaza and the war in Ukraine.
Touching on the importance of long-term solution to conflicts, he said being united is crucial for it, which allows different parties to sit together and discuss “how this long-term solution can be achieved starting from day one.”
“Unfortunately, until now we don’t see this agreement,” Denkov said. “So, until we can get this target point, it would be very difficult to do anything.”
Israel has pounded the Gaza Strip since a cross-border attack by Palestinian group Hamas in October, killing more than 28,700 people, mostly women and children. About 1,200 Israelis were killed in the initial Hamas incursion.
It stands accused of genocide at the International Court of Justice, which in an interim ruling in January ordered Tel Aviv to stop genocidal acts and take measures to guarantee that humanitarian assistance is provided to civilians in Gaza.
