The Hywind Tampen, the world’s largest floating offshore wind farm with 88 megawatts (MW) of installed capacity, was inaugurated on Wednesday, according to project partner and Norwegian energy provider Equinor.

Equinor’s wind farm is made up of 11 wind turbines based on floating Hywind technology.

It is expected to reduce CO2 emissions by 200,000 tons annually from key oil and gas producers in the North Sea.

It is considered a pioneering project in partnership with Gullfaks, Snorre and Enova, and is managed from Equinor’s office location in Bergen.

It is expected to cover about 35% of the annual power needs of five offshore oil and gas platforms: Snorre A and B and Gullfaks A, B and C in the North Sea.

Kjetil Hove, the executive vice president for the Norwegian continental shelf at Equinor, described the project as an ‘industrial development we can be proud of.’

He added that the project has given Equinor and the supplier industry valuable experience for the development and scaling up of offshore wind in Norway and globally.

According to the statement, the project investment amounted to around NOK 7.4 billion when the plan for development and operation was submitted, while the development cost was estimated at about NOK 5 billion.
