German wind turbine manufacturer ENERCON expands wind energy operations in Türkiye

German wind turbine manufacturer ENERCON is expanding its operations in Türkiye, positioning the country as a strategic manufacturing and export hub as it deepens investment in wind energy and considers entering the hybrid energy and battery storage market, a company executive said on Wednesday.

“Türkiye has become a strategic manufacturing and export hub for ENERCON. We are rapidly expanding our operations in Türkiye in line with YEKA projects, domestic market demand and export targets toward neighboring countries ” Heiko Juritz, ENERCON Chief Operating Officer and Executive Board Member told Anadolu on the sidelines of the 15th Türkiye Wind Energy Congress (TÜREK).

Juritz said the turbine rotor blade manufacturing facility, which will be established in Türkiye with a 50 million-euro investment in the fourth quarter of this year, will utilize “proven next-generation technology” already deployed at the company’s production sites in Europe.

He noted that ENERCON is already using the same technology in Portugal and said the rotor blades to be manufactured in Türkiye are specifically designed for large-scale wind turbines.

“ENERCON recently secured two projects in the YEKA RES-2025 tenders, and the turbine components to be used in these projects will be manufactured at the new production facility to be established in Türkiye,” he said.

Juritz added that Türkiye already has an established and proven supply chain, which is now being expanded with new suppliers and next-generation materials.

He said the company’s ambitions extend beyond the domestic market and include positioning Türkiye as a regional manufacturing base serving neighboring markets, such as Romania, Italy, Greece and the Balkan countries.

“With this new production model, we aim to combine Turkish manufacturing capabilities with German engineering,” he said.

Juritz also underlined the growing importance of logistics infrastructure, noting that the increasing size of wind turbine blades makes port infrastructure, heavy-lift crane capacity and transportation systems critical for the sector.

While ENERCON currently does not foresee major logistical constraints in Türkiye, he said infrastructure investments would become increasingly important for next-generation high-capacity wind turbines.

He also emphasized the importance of Türkiye’s plan to launch new YEKA tenders annually, saying investors require a more predictable market environment.

“The current YEKA model is regarded as a successful framework when compared with similar mechanisms in Europe. However, frequent regulatory changes are perceived as a risk by investors. What we need is predictability. Stability in demand, regulations and the investment climate is critical for large-scale wind energy investments,” Juritz said.

Juritz further stated that some foreign wind turbine OEMs are operating in Türkiye without establishing local manufacturing capacity or generating employment, arguing that this undermines fair competition.

“We believe it is important to support companies that invest in domestic manufacturing, create employment and contribute to a sustainable industrial ecosystem through supportive mechanisms,” he said.

Juritz added that ENERCON’s activities in Türkiye would not remain limited to wind turbine manufacturing.

“ENERCON is also evaluating bringing its hybrid energy and battery energy storage system solutions, launched in Germany, to Türkiye. Türkiye is among the target countries for battery storage investments. We aim to establish a presence in hybrid solutions and battery energy storage systems here as well,” he said.

– ‘Renewable energy has become a strategic sector’

Arif Gunyar , Türkiye General Manager and Regional Head for Central Asia, the Middle East and Africa, said the company’s new 50 million-euro manufacturing facility investment reflects confidence in Türkiye’s renewable energy growth potential and energy policies.

He stressed that the new facility will be critical not only for the global supply chain but also for the domestic market.

“Approximately 50% of the production capacity will serve the Turkish market. If such an investment decision has been made, it means the market environment has reached a certain level of maturity. The expansion of renewable energy targets by the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources played a key role in this investment decision,” he said.

He added that renewable energy is no longer only important for combating climate change but has also become a strategic sector in terms of energy security and economic independence.
