WASHINGTON

The US is planning for a visit by Brazilian President-elect Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva to meet President Joe Biden “at the appropriate time,” the White House confirmed on Friday.

“I can confirm that we are planning for a visit,” US National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby told reporters. “We look forward to welcoming President Lula here at the appropriate time.”

Kirby also said that Biden’s National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan will head to Brazil on Monday, where he will meet members of both the outgoing President Jair Bolsonaro’s administration as well as the incoming administration.

Bolsonaro lost to Lula, who garnered 50.9% of the votes compared to Bolsonaro’s 49.1%, according to Brazil’s Superior Electoral Court.

Lula is set to be sworn in for a third term Jan. 1.
