A consortium led by American businessman Bill Chisholm has reached an agreement to purchase NBA franchise Boston Celtics for a record $6.1 billion, marking the most expensive team sale in North American sports history, according to US media reports.
The Celtics, previously acquired by the Grousbeck family for $360 million in 2002, have now changed ownership after 23 years in the landmark deal.
As the most successful team in NBA history with 18 championships, the Celtics currently boast a roster featuring stars such as Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, Kristaps Porzingis and Al Horford. The reigning champions hold a 50-19 record this season, ranking second in the Eastern Conference.
Previously, the Washington Commanders of the National Football League (NFL) were sold for $6.05 billion, while another NBA team, the Phoenix Suns, changed hands for $4 billion.
