US stocks open Monday mixed after posting weekly losses

ISTANBUL

US stocks opened Monday on a mixed note after posting weekly losses.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 85 points, or 0.2%, to 41,965 at 10.10 a.m. EDT (1510GMT). The blue-chip index lost 0.2% last week.

The S&P 500, on the other hand, rose just 23 points, or 0.41% to 5,730 after sawing a weekly decline off 1.4%.

The Nasdaq, however, decreased 14 points, or 0.8%, to 18,225. The tech-heavy index fell 1.5% last week.

The VIX volatility index, referred to as the “fear index,” rose 1.9% to 22.30. The 10-year US Treasury yield fell 2% to 4.278%.

The US dollar index lost 0.6% to 103.67, while the euro gained 0.6% against the dollar, trading at $1.0931.

Precious metals were in positive territory. Gold added 0.3% to $2,743 per ounce and silver rose 0.7% to $32.66.

Oil prices increased around 2%, with global benchmark Brent crude at $74.62 per barrel and US benchmark West Texas Intermediate at $71.04.
