Google and Kairos Power signed the world’s first corporate agreement to purchase nuclear energy from multiple small modular reactors (SMR) to be developed by Kairos Power, Google announced on Monday.

Google said it plays an important role in accelerating clean energy solutions, including the next generation of advanced clean technologies.

The agreement outlines plans for the first SMR to come online by 2030, with additional reactors to be deployed by 2035.

Once operational, the SMRs will generate up to 500 megawatts of carbon-free energy, providing US electricity grids with clean and affordable nuclear power to benefit more communities.

Google highlighted that the grid needs new electricity sources to support AI technologies that are powering major scientific advances, improving services for businesses and customers and driving national competitiveness and economic growth.

With the deal, Google aims to help accelerate a new technology to meet energy needs in a clean and reliable way and unlock the full potential of AI for everyone.
