5.0 magnitude earthquake strikes Türkiye’s Sea of Marmara

ISTANBUL

A magnitude 5.0 earthquake struck Türkiye’s Sea of Marmara on Thursday, authorities reported.

According to Türkiye’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), the epicenter was located off the coast of the town of Marmaraereglisi in the northwestern Tekirdag province at 2.55 pm local time (1155 GMT).

The quake occurred at a depth of 6.71 kilometers (4.2 miles).

The Istanbul Governor’s Office said officials have received damage reports for four buildings across various districts, and emergency teams have been dispatched to the sites.

As of 4.40 pm local time (1340 GMT), no injuries have been reported to hospitals in Istanbul, the governor’s office said. However, 12 people contacted emergency services due to panic attacks, while five others reported panic-related sprains.

The Sea of Marmara links the Aegean and Black seas.
