World steel output falls 4.2% in 2022

ANKARA

Global crude steel production fell 4.2% annually to 1.9 billion tons in 2022, according to World Steel Association (worldsteel) data released on Tuesday.

Except for India and Iran, the world’s top 10 steel producers saw a decline in output last year.

The world’s number one steel producer China saw a 2.1% decline in its 2022 figure of 1.01 billion tons.

The steel production of India – the number two producer – rose 5.5% to 124.7 million tons last year. The figure was down 7.4% to 89.2 million tons in Japan and down 5.9% to 80.7 million in the US.

Türkiye, the world’s eighth-largest crude steel producer, registered a 12.9% drop in crude steel production last year, to 35.1 million tons.

In December, world steel production for the 64 countries reporting to worldsteel dove 10.8% year-on-year to 140.7 million tons.
