At the biggest sporting event of the year, the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, the US dominated basketball, winning gold medals in both men’s and women’s basketball.
Dubbed as the “New Dream Team,” featuring the world’s best basketball players such as LeBron James, Stephen Curry, Devin Booker, Kevin Durant, Anthony Davis, Jayson Tatum, and others, the US defeated host France 98-87 in the men’s final to win the gold medal.
With this result, the US men’s team won their fifth consecutive Olympic championship and 17th in total.
The US women’s basketball team also defeated host France 67-66 in the final to become the Olympic champions for the eighth time in a row and 10th time in total.
- Boston Celtics end 16-year NBA title drought
In the American Basketball League (NBA), the world’s most popular basketball organization, the Boston Celtics became the champions after 16 years.
The Celtics, who beat the Dallas Mavericks 4-1 in the final series, experienced the joy of a championship after 2008.
The Celtics won their 18th championship in NBA history, surpassing the Los Angeles Lakers as the team with the most wins in the organization.
– Victory for New York Liberty in WNBA
New York Liberty became the champion of the Women’s National Basketball Association of America (WNBA).
The Liberty won the first championship in their history with a 3-2 victory over the Minnesota Lynx in the final series.
– Turkish head coach at the top of the EuroLeague
Greek team Panathinaikos, coached by Turkish head coach Ergin Ataman, bagged the trophy in Europe’s top-tier men’s basketball organization at the club level, Turkish Airlines EuroLeague.
Ataman, who ended the Greek team’s 13-year championship drought, lifted the EuroLeague trophy for the third time in his career.
- Fenerbahce women’s basketball team win FIBA EuroLeague
Fenerbahce women’s basketball team won the FIBA EuroLeague title in 2024.
The Yellow Canaries defeated French team ASVEL 109-52 in the final and took the EuroLeague trophy for the second time in a row.
Fenerbahce also defeated Besiktas in the FIBA Super Cup and won this trophy for the second time in a row.
- Other teams to win trophies in Europe
In European basketball, trophies were won in organizations other than the EuroLeague.
French team Paris Basketball won the BKT European Cup and secured their ticket to the EuroLeague.
In FIBA organizations, Spanish team Unicaja Malaga won the Champions League, and German team Niners Chemnitz won the FIBA Europe Cup after defeating Turkish representative Bahcesehir College in the final.
In the women’s competition, the FIBA Europe Cup was won by London Lions representing Great Britain, who defeated Turkish side Besiktas in the final.
