British telecommunications company Vodafone and energy company Centrica signed a power purchase agreement with Greek company Mytilineos for five solar farms that are under construction in England, the companies announced on Tuesday.
Under the agreement, the solar farms will generate 216 gigawatt-hours of clean electricity, where Vodafone and Centrica will be the power suppliers and Mytilineos will be the generator.
The five solar farms, located in Norfolk, Nottinghamshire, Staffordshire, Buckinghamshire and Dorset, will displace more than 53,000 tonnes of carbon emissions every year.
Under the deal, Vodafone UK will have access to clean, high quality and affordable renewable electricity for the next ten years.
Construction is planned to begin this year, with energy generation expected to begin in early 2024.
Vodafone will purchase a significant proportion of the electricity output from the solar farms, ‘securing their development and bringing additional renewable power provision to the UK grid,’ Centrica said.
The remainder of the electricity will be sold through Centrica’s Energy Marketing & Trading business.
