US stocks open with losses to kick off week lower

ISTANBUL

Major US stock exchanges opened with losses on Monday to kick off the new week on a lower note.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average decreased 66 points, or 0.15%, to 43.210 as of 9.39 a.m. EDT (1339GMT).

The S&P 500 fell seven points, or 0.12% to 5,858. The Nasdaq Composite lost 15 points, or 0.8%, to 18.470.

The VIX volatility index, referred to as the “fear index,” jumped 4.9% to 18.90. The 10-year US Treasury yield rose 1.66% to 4.143%.

The US dollar index increased 0.16% to 103.63, while the euro lost 0.15% against the dollar, trading at $1.0848.

Precious metals were in positive territory. Gold added 0.7% to $2,739 per ounce and silver rose 1.3% to $34.07 per ounce.

Oil prices increased around 1.6%, with global benchmark Brent crude at $74.22 per barrel and US benchmark West Texas Intermediate at $69.28 per barrel.
