US stocks open lower

ISTANBUL 

US stocks opened in the red Tuesday.

The Dow was down 88 points, or 0.25%, to 33,898 at 10.01 a.m. EDT. The S&P 500 fell 31 points, or 0.71%, to 4,341.

The Nasdaq, meanwhile, was off 164 points, or 1.21%, to 13,405.

The VIX volatility index, also known as the fear index, jumped 6.9% to 18.39. The 10-year US Treasury yield rose 2.8% to 4.840%.

The dollar index was almost flat at 106.44 while the euro added 0.1% to $1.0561 against the greenback.

Precious metals posted strong gains, with gold adding 0.4% to $1,928 an ounce and silver soaring 1.5% to $22.94.

Oil prices rose more than 0.4%, with global benchmark Brent crude at $89.98 per barrel and US benchmark West Texas Intermediate at $85.71.
