US stocks open lower Thursday

ISTANBUL

US stocks opened Thursday on a lower note.

The Dow Jones plummeted 285 points, or 0.85%, to 33,843 at 9.33 a.m. EDT. The S&P 500 lost 46 points, or 1.1%, to 4,101.

The tech-heavy Nasdaq fell 161 points, or 1.34%, to start the day at 11,905.

The VIX volatility index, also known as the fear index, jumped 7.4% to 19.58. The 10-year US Treasury yield, meanwhile, rose 1% to 3.845%.

The dollar index was up 0.12% to 104.04, while the euro trimmed 0.2% to $1.0668 against the greenback.

Precious metals were in negative territory with gold losing 0.2% to $1,831 an ounce and silver shedding 0.8% to $21.45.

Crude oil prices were up more than 0.1% with global benchmark Brent crude at $85.40 per barrel and US benchmark West Texas Intermediate at $78.69.
