ISTANBUL

US stocks were mixed Friday amid weak macroeconomic results.

The Dow was up 135 points, or 0.4%, to 33,960 at 11.22 a.m. EDT. The S&P 500 gained 12 points, or 0.3%, to 4,147.

The Nasdaq, on the other hand, declined four points, or 0.04%, to 12,137.

The VIX volatility index, also known as the fear index, plummeted 4.3% to 16.30. Meanwhile, the 10-year US Treasury yield fell 2.2% to 3.452%.

The dollar index rose 0.1% to 101.57, while the euro added 0.1% to $1.1037 against the greenback.

Precious metals were unchanged, with the price of gold at $1,989 per ounce and silver at 0.3% to $24.94.

Oil prices were up more than 2%, with global benchmark Brent crude at $80.12 per barrel and US benchmark West Texas Intermediate crude at $76.50.

The Federal Reserve’s preferred inflation indicator, core personal consumption expenditures price index rose 4.6% annually in March, down from a 4.7% year-on-year gain, according to the Commerce Department figures released earlier.

Americans’ personal spending, however, remained steady in March, from the previous month, the Commerce Department said.
