US stocks mixed after lower opening

ISTANBUL

US stocks were mixed Wednesday after starting on a lower note.

The Dow Jones was down 133 points, or 0.39%, to 34,284 at 10.26 a.m. EDT (1426GMT). The S&P 500 lost five points, or 0.11%, to 4,450.

The Nasdaq, on the other hand, increased 21 points, or 0.16%, to 13,839.

The VIX volatility index, also known as the fear index, rose 3.3% to 14.16. The 10-year US Treasury yield, meanwhile, added 0.55% to 3.879%.

The dollar index was flat at 103.04, while the euro was unchanged at $1.0880 against the greenback.

Precious metals were mixed, with gold falling 0.2% to $1,922 per ounce, but silver increasing 0.8% to $23.15.

Oil prices were up around 1%, with global benchmark Brent crude at $76.36 per barrel and US benchmark West Texas Intermediate at $71.53.

The New York Stock Exchange was closed Tuesday for the observance of Independence Day.
