US stock market opens mixed Monday to kick off new week

ISTANBUL

Major exchanges in the US stock market opened mixed on Monday to kick off the new week.

The Dow Jones rose 15 points, or 0.05%, to 33,902 at 10.11 a.m. EDT.

The S&P 500, on the other hand, trimmed two points, or 0.02%, to open flat 4,139.

The Nasdaq fell seven points, or 0.06%, to 12,117 at the time.

The VIX volatility index, also known as the fear index, jumped 1.9% to 17.40. Meanwhile, the 10-year US Treasury yield rose 1.3% to 3.568%.

The dollar index added 0.5% to 102.06, while the euro lost 0.7% to $1.0921 against the greenback.

Precious metals were in negative territory, with the price of gold losing 0.5% to $1,993 per ounce and silver falling 0.8% to $25.16 an ounce.

Crude oil prices declined around 0.3% with the price of global benchmark Brent crude at $86.02 per barrel and US benchmark West Texas Intermediate crude price at $82.14.
