US stock market opens lower except for Dow Jones

ANKARA

Major indices in the US stock market opened with losses on Monday, except for the Dow Jones.

The blue-chip index increased 16 points, or 0.05%, to 33,762 at 9.44 a.m. EDT (1444GMT).

While the S&P 500 fell 13 points, or 0.34%, to 3,951, the Nasdaq lost 52 points, or 0.48%, to hit 11,093.

The VIX volatility index, also known as the fear index, rose 1.9% to 23.55. The 10-year US Treasury yield declined 1.1% to 3.776%.

The dollar index added 0.7% to 107.70, still around its highest in 20 years, while the euro fell 0.8% to $1.0243 against the greenback.

Precious metals were down, with gold falling 0.5% to $1,741 per ounce and silver shedding 0.7% to $20.80.

Oil prices plummeted more than 5%. Global benchmark Brent crude traded at $82.93 per barrel for a loss of 5.4%. US benchmark West Texas Intermediate crude was around $75.83, down 5.3%.
