US has ‘unique role to play’ to end violence in Middle East: Lawmaker

WASHINGTON

US Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal on Friday expressed concern about escalating tension in the Middle East.

“I am extremely concerned about escalating violence in the Middle East. This cycle of violence will not make anyone more secure and will certainly only lead to further losses of civilian life in Israel, Gaza, Lebanon, Iran, and throughout the region,” Jayapal said on X.

Calling for de-escalation and prevention of further violence from erupting, Jayapal said she believes that starts with a negotiated cease-fire and hostage deal, to end the bombing in the Gaza Strip and return all those still held by Hamas.

“The United States has a unique role to play here. We can and must use all of the tools in our toolbox to help push for an end to this violence.

“We must use all of our leverage to work toward safety and security in the region to protect innocent civilian lives,” she added.

The war in Gaza spread to Lebanon when Israel launched deadly strikes across the country late last month, killing more than 1,100 people, displacing tens of thousands and assassinating Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah.

Fears are growing that continued escalation could lead to an all-out war in the region.
