UN secretary-general, Tajik president discuss cooperation at meeting in Dushanbe

Tajik President Emomali Rakhmon and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres discussed cooperation between Tajikistan and the global organization at a meeting in Dushanbe on Friday.

Rakhmon praised the UN’s role in implementing important programs for the country, according to his press service.

Guterres said that despite being a small country, Tajikistan “exerts great influence and plays an outstanding role in the work of the United Nations and the global community as a whole.”

The two officials also exchanged views on preventing global threats and challenges humanity faces today, including reforming the international financial system to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals and addressing climate change and its negative consequences.

“Regarding security issues, the parties called for a joint response to the growing threats of terrorism, extremism, and cross-border organized crime, including drug trafficking and other global dangers,” the statement said.

Rakhmon reiterated Tajikistan’s support for the UN’s efforts to address sustainable development, strengthen peace and security, develop science and technology, utilize innovations, and enhance cooperation in digitalization.
