UN says it is committed to peace on divided Cyprus

UNITED NATIONS

UN political affairs chief Rosemary Di Carlo reiterated the global body’s commitment Wednesday to resolving the long-standing dispute between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots on the divided island of Cyprus.

DiCarlo met Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot President Ersin Tatar during a visit to the island, according to UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric.

”She reiterated the UN’s continued commitment to peace on the island,” Dujarric told reporters at UN headquarters in New York.

Cyprus has been mired in a decades-long dispute between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots, despite a series of diplomatic efforts by the UN to achieve a comprehensive settlement.

It has seen an on-and-off peace process in recent years, including a failed 2017 initiative in Switzerland under the auspices of guarantor countries Türkiye, Greece, and the UK.

Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) and Türkiye maintain a two-state solution reflecting realities on the island, while Greek Cypriots and Greece insist on a federation on Cyprus.
