Jordan’s UN envoy Mahmoud Daifallah Hmoud on Tuesday became the newest member of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) during an election by the UN General Assembly and Security Council.
Receiving the required majority votes at both sessions, Hmoud was elected to fill the vacancy following the resignation of Judge Nawaf Salam.
His term will be from May 27 until Feb. 5, 2027.
Salam, the ICJ’s chief judge, resigned in January, nearly two years before the scheduled end of his term as a member and president of the court, which was set to expire Feb. 5.
Prior to his resignation, Salam was named to form a new government in Lebanon.
The president of ICJ is elected internally among judges of the top court via secret ballot for a three-year term.
