UN Agency for Palestinian Refugees suspends food distribution in Rafah over insecurity

WASHINGTON

The UN’s Agency for Palestinian Refugees, or UNRWA, said Tuesday it has suspended food distribution in the southern Gaza city of Rafah.

“Food distributions in Rafah are currently suspended due to lack of supplies and insecurity,” UNRWA wrote on X.

Only seven of 24 UNRWA health centers are operational, it added.

“In the last ten days they have not received any medical supplies due to Rafah and Kerem Shalom crossing closures/disruptions,” it said.

UNRWA said the agency’s distribution center, as well as the World Food Programme’s warehouse, both in Rafah, “are now inaccessible” due to the ongoing Israeli military operation in eastern Rafah.

Israel has continued its brutal offensive on the Gaza Strip despite a UN Security Council resolution demanding an immediate cease-fire in the enclave.

More than 35,600 Palestinians have been killed, the vast majority being women and children, and nearly 79,900 others injured since October following an attack by the Palestinian group, Hamas.

More than seven months into the Israeli onslaught, vast swathes of Gaza lay in ruins amid a crippling blockade of food, clean water and medicine.

Israel is accused of genocide at the International Court of Justice, which has ordered it to ensure that its forces do not commit acts of genocide and take measures to guarantee that humanitarian assistance is provided to civilians in Gaza.
