Turkish tennis player Zeynep Sonmez was eliminated from the US Open on Tuesday after losing to American fourth seed Coco Gauff in the first round.

Sonmez, ranked No. 53 in the world, lost 6-3, 6-4 to Gauff in a match at Arthur Ashe Stadium, the main court at the New York tournament and the largest tennis stadium in the world.

The 24-year-old Sonmez, who reached the second round at last year’s US Open, was unable to repeat that run as Gauff advanced in straight sets.

Gauff, the 2023 US Open champion, moved into the second round with the victory.

Sonmez made history at Wimbledon last year by becoming the first Turkish player to reach the third round there and the first player from Türkiye to reach that stage at a Grand Slam tournament since 1950.
