Türkiye’s retail sales down 1.8% in April

Türkiye’s retail sales decreased for the second straight month in April, down 1.8% from the prior month, according to data released on Tuesday.

This followed March’s downwardly revised 0.2% month-on-month decline, the Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat) data showed.

Retail trade volume for non-food – except automotive fuel – fell 3.1% and for automotive fuel dropped 0.3% in the same period.

Food, drinks, and tobacco sales, on the other hand, gained 0.7% from a month earlier in April.

Among non-food items, electronic goods and furniture saw the largest decrease with 5.7% in the month.

On an annual basis, retail sales surged 10.2% in April, easing from a 19.8% year-on-year hike in March.

Non-food sales – except automotive fuel – went up by 13.3% at an annualized pace in April.

Sales of food, drinks, and tobacco jumped 10.1% compared to last year, while automotive fuel sales decreased 3.7%, the TurkStat data showed.
