Türkiye’s natural gas imports increased by 4.38% in December 2023 compared to the same month in 2022, according to data from Türkiye’s energy watchdog on Tuesday.
Natural gas imports in December increased to around 6.06 billion cubic meters (bcm) from approximately 5.80 bcm in the same month of 2022, Türkiye’s Energy Market Regulatory Authority (EMRA) said in its monthly natural gas market report.
According to EMRA data, the country imported approximately 5.14 bcm of natural gas via pipelines in December 2023, while 300 million cubic meters (mcm) were purchased as LNG. This represents a 0.48% decrease in pipeline imports and a 78.8% increase in LNG imports.
Russia was the largest natural gas supplier to Türkiye, providing 2.02 bcm, while Azerbaijan and Iran followed with 962 mcm and 781 mcm, respectively.
The US was the biggest LNG exporter to Türkiye with 1.17 bcm.
The country’s total gas consumption also increased by 0.68% to approximately 5.26 bcm compared to the same month in 2022.
Household consumption increased by 9.02% to 2.27 bcm, while gas consumption in power plants decreased by 35% to 741 bcm during the same period.
The natural gas storage volume in December 2023 increased by 2.02% to around 5.44 bcm, compared to 5.33 bcm in December 2022.
