Türkiye was elected on Wednesday to the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), the principal body responsible for coordinating the UN’s work on sustainable development and economic issues.
In a statement on X, Türkiye’s UN envoy Ahmet Yildiz extended his gratitude to member states for their trust and support.
“We look forward to working together to advance global development agenda,” Yildiz said.
Türkiye was elected with 174 votes under the Western European and other States regional group to serve a three-year term, along with Australia, Finland, and Norway.
A total 18 countries were elected to the UN body; four from African states, four from the Asia-Pacific states, three from Eastern European states, and three from Latin American and the Caribbean states.
The new members will begin their terms on Jan. 1, 2026.
