May 8, 2026 6:06 pmTürkiye and Algeria could renew their existing liquefied natural gas (LNG) supply agreement this year, with plans to increase annual volumes, Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar said on Friday.
Speaking at the Presidential Complex in Ankara, Bayraktar said the two countries discussed energy cooperation, particularly LNG trade as well as oil and natural gas exploration activities.
“We hope to conclude a new agreement this year,” Bayraktar said, noting that the current LNG deal expires in September 2027.
“We currently have an agreement for 4.4 billion cubic meters per year. We could increase it to 6–6.5 billion cubic meters, as it was before. We could set the duration at 5–10 years,” he added.
Bayraktar also said Türkiye and Algeria could cooperate in transporting Algerian LNG through Türkiye, particularly to Southeastern Europe via Bulgaria.
– Cooperation in exploration of oil and natural gas
He noted that another major agenda item was cooperation between Turkish Petroleum Corporation (TPAO) and Algeria’s Sonatrach in oil and natural gas exploration.
“One of the important agenda items was cooperation between TPAO and Sonatrach, using our seismic and drilling vessels to explore oil and natural gas in Algerian waters,” he said.
In a post on the Turkish social media platform NSosyal, Bayraktar said the first meeting of the Türkiye-Algeria High-Level Strategic Cooperation Council was held at the Presidential Complex under the auspices of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune.
He said the two countries expect to deepen energy cooperation further, particularly in LNG trade and joint oil and gas exploration projects.
“We believe the deep-rooted partnership between Türkiye and Algeria will continue to deepen on the basis of mutual trust and a shared vision,” Bayraktar said.
