July 20, 2023 2:49 pm‘A Better Future’ platform to address economic efficiency in Türkiye through scientific research was launched by Türkiye’s electricity utility firm Enerjisa on Thursday.
The Turkish Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources, the Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Türkiye (TOBB), the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) are among the institutions and organizations that support the platform and serve on its advisory board.
The platform’s first real initiative was the publication of an efficiency survey report covering the baseline conditions, priorities, future expectations and risks of Turkish businesses in terms of efficiency.
The report, in which 1,249 businesses from 12 industries across 18 provinces contributed, includes sectoral and regional analyses of the survey.
A committee consisting of academicians specializing in economy, energy, and sustainability, as well as an independent research company, worked on the research and analyses.
The findings of the report show that the percentage of businesses that invest in increasing efficiency is 22%, but this percentage drops to 17% for large-scale enterprises.
The report found that the main benefit that businesses attach to efficiency is cost reductions and savings, requiring the development of an innovation-based perspective to increase competitiveness through efficiency measures, including energy savings, waste reduction and recycling.
The report demonstrated that data analysis management is critical to adopting efficiency measures, explaining that even though businesses invest in analysis tools, they are unable to undertake data analysis effectively, resulting in a cycle of inefficiency.
The availability of financing for environmental action is key for businesses to instigate efficiency measures, like reducing plastic use, carbon management and waste management.
Customer-driven demand for efficiency measures was found to act as an incentive in conjunction with information on relevant financing opportunities, grants, loans and resource efficiency solutions to ensure efficiency.
