NEW YORK, NY
Mustafa Tosun, a Turkish citizen from Erzincan, who saved the couple who fell into the water channel in the Long Island region of New York by risking their lives, made headlines in the local press.
The vehicle whose driver lost control went off the road, crossed the barriers and fell into the canal. Turkish citizen Mustafa Tosun, who saw the accident, jumped into the water without thinking. A few more people who saw him jumped into the canal.
Security camera footage of the drowning moment of the 78-year-old Joseph and 76-year-old Delores Abitabile couple were released by Mustafa Tosun and other citizens who jumped into the water.
“I LOOKED, NO ONE IS INTERESTED, I GAVE MY PHONE, WALLET TO MY PARTNER AND JUMPED INTO THE WATER”
Mustafa Tosun, who has been running an auto repair shop in Lindenhurst, New York for 30 years, said, “I looked left and right, nobody is interested. Without thinking, I gave my partner my phone, my wallet and jumped into the water.
“Even though the old man in the car was not my father, it was somebody’s father, I have saved his life.” Appreciated with his courage.
Mustafa Tosun shouted, “The old man was shouting that I don’t know how to swim, and the people around were describing what to do. “I couldn’t stand it and jumped into the water, if I didn’t, I would have a guilty conscience,” he said.
A chain-reaction crash sent a couple in their 70s plunging into a Long Island canal, with police and good Samaritans pulling them out of the water. Authorities say the driver's wife was pulled from the car with no pulse – but an officer managed to revive her by performing CPR. Both husband and wife are awake and alert.
