Tottenham Hotspur’s Italian manager Antonio Conte on Sunday left the London club after 16 months in charge.

“We can announce that Head Coach Antonio Conte has left the Club by mutual agreement. We achieved Champions League qualification in Antonio’s first season at the Club. We thank Antonio for his contribution and wish him well for the future,” Tottenham said in a statement.

Spurs announced Cristian Stellini as acting head coach for the remainder of the season alongside Ryan Mason, who is his assistant.

Tottenham are ranked fourth in the Premier League table and desperate in the title race. They are 20 points behind leaders Arsenal, who are also their archrivals.

Spurs were eliminated from all cup competitions including the UEFA Champions League in recent weeks.

Tottenham are yet to win a trophy for 15 years, and last bagged the 2008 League Cup.

Last season, the London club came fourth in the Premier League to have guaranteed a place in this season’s Champions League.

Conte, 53, was appointed in 2021. He coached Chelsea to win the Premier League in 2017, and also claimed the Italian league titles with Juventus and Inter Milan.
