Top Chinese, US finance chiefs set to meet

ISTANBUL

The Chinese and the US financial chiefs will meet on Thursday and Friday on the sidelines of the ongoing Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum in Detroit, Michigan.

China’s Commerce Minister Wang Wentao will meet US Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo and US Trade Representative Katherine Tai, Chinese Commerce Ministry spokesperson said on Thursday, according to the state-run Global Times newspaper.

Xie Feng, China’s new ambassador to the US, who arrived in New York on Tuesday, said relations with the US face “serious difficulties and challenges,” and that he aims to enhance bilateral cooperation.

He landed at the John F. Kennedy International Airport, where he told reporters that he came to “safeguard China’s interests.”

“I’m also the envoy of Chinese people, so I’ve come here to enhance China-US exchanges and cooperation,” he said.

“President Xi Jinping has put forward the three principles of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation, which represent the fundamental and right way for the two countries to get along with each other in the new era,” Xie later wrote on Twitter.
