Spain fines Amazon, Apple $218M for restricting competition

ISTANBUL

The Spanish National Markets and Competition Commission (CNMC) has fined US-based technology giants Apple and Amazon €194.1 million ($218 million) for breaching competition rules.

Both firms restricted the number of resellers of Apple products on Amazon’s website in Spain, “unreasonably,” the commission said on Tuesday.

Firms limited the advertising spaces on the Amazon website in Spain, it said.

“Finally, they limited the possibility of Amazon directing marketing campaigns to customers of Apple products on its website in Spain to offer them competing products from other brands,” it added.

The CNMC fined Amazon €143.6 million and Apple €50.5 million.
