Southampton relegated from Premier League after 11 years in English top division

ISTANBUL

After over a decade in the English Premier League, Southampton were relegated on Saturday.

Fulham won the 36th-week match with goals by Carlos Vinicius and Aleksandar Mitrovic at St Mary’s Stadium to climb to the number nine spot with 51 points.

“It’s disappointing, it’s a moment that has been coming. We have done well to get to this stage of the season,” said Southampton captain James Ward-Prowse. “We’ll go away and look at ourselves, we haven’t done everything we could have.”

With two matches to go, Southampton, with 24 points under their belt, became the first club this season to be relegated from the English Premier League.

Southampton had been in the Premier League for 11 years, since April 2012.

Saturday results:

Manchester United – Wolverhampton: 2-0

Aston Villa – Tottenham Hotspur: 2-1

Crystal Palace – Bournemouth: 2-0

Leeds United – Newcastle United: 2-2

Chelsea – Nottingham Forest: 2-2
