Sevilla sack manager Sampaoli after string of poor results

ISTANBUL

Sevilla on Tuesday relieved their Argentine manager Jorge Sampaoli of his duties over disappointing results.

“Following defeat at Getafe, which leaves the side just above the relegation zone, the club have decided to part ways with the Argentine coach ahead of the international break,” Sevilla said in a statement.

The Spanish club faced a 2-0 La Liga defeat by Getafe on Sunday. The loss leaves Sevilla 14th in the table, only two points above the La Liga relegation zone.

Under his helm, Sevilla beat Fenerbahce to advance to the UEFA Europa League quarterfinals this season.

He was previously in charge of the Spanish club in 2016-17, and returned to the team last October after the sacking of Julen Lopetegui.

The 63-year-old head coach won 13, drew six, and lost 12 of the 31 Sevilla matches he presided.
