Saudi Arabia decides to be ‘mature guys’ in spat with US, says minister

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia/ANKARA

Saudi Arabia decided to be the “mature guys” during the recent spat with the US over oil production, according to the kingdom’s Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman.

Riyadh has recently drawn Washington’s ire over the decision by the OPEC+ oil producer group to slash its output.

US President Joe Biden has been vocal in his criticism, warning Saudi Arabia, which leads the group, of consequences.

“We, as Saudi Arabia, decided to be the mature guys,” Salman said at the Future Investment Initiative conference in Riyadh on Tuesday.

Saudi Arabia’s Investment Minister Khalid Al-Falih also brushed off fears of a breakdown in ties with the US, asserting that relations between the traditional allies are “historical and solid.”

Over 80 years of diplomatic relations, “a lot of water has passed under the bridge,” he said, adding that Riyadh and Washington will be able to overcome their recent differences.
