The integration of the Power of Siberia 2 pipeline could increase Russia’s natural gas shipments to China to 100 billion cubic meters (bcm), according to Russian Deputy Prime Minister Novak on Wednesday.
During the Russian Federation Council, Novak stated that 22 bcm of natural gas will be shipped to China through the Power of Siberia 1 pipeline this year.
However, he divulged that by 2025, natural gas transmission through the pipeline will reach full capacity of 38 billion cubic meters.
With the addition of the Power of Siberia 2 pipeline, with an anticipated capacity of 50 bcm when complete, along with transmission via the Power of Siberia 1 pipeline and LNG, Russia’s total natural gas shipment volume to China could reach approximately 100 bcm.
Russian energy giant Gazprom aims to increase supplies to Asian markets, particularly China, as gas exports to Europe have dropped sharply due to sanctions imposed on Russia over the Ukraine war.
As one of the main gas suppliers to China, Russia exported 6.5 million tons of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to China last year, corresponding to 8.9 bcm of natural gas.
Last year, Gazprom supplied 10.4 billion cubic meters of natural gas to China via the Power of Siberia 1 pipeline.
According to Novak, following the lifting of the ban on gasoline exports last week, the country plans to soon lift the ban on diesel exports.
