MOSCOW
A monument to honor the memory of Russian Ambassador Andrey Karlov, who was killed in Türkiye by the FETO terror group, was unveiled in the hall of one of Moscow’s most prestigious universities.
Russian and Turkish officials attended the ceremony to open the Ambassador Karlov monument at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO), Karlov’s alma mater.
Turkish Ambassador to Moscow Tanju Bilgic, during the ceremony, expressed the Turkish Republic’s deep condolences for the killing of the Russian diplomat.
The MGIMO Provost Anatoly Torkunov, for his part, said the monument will remind the next generations of Karlov’s “wonderful, bright, and at the same time tragic fate.”
Several Russian senior diplomats and officials attended the ceremony, laying flowers at the monument and expressing their condolences and support for Karlov’s family.
On Dec. 10, 2016, Karlov was speaking at an art exhibit in the Turkish capital of Ankara when he was shot and killed by Mevlut Mert Altintas, an off-duty police officer linked to FETO, the terror group behind the 2016 defeated coup attempt in Türkiye.
Altintas was shot dead during a standoff after killing Karlov.
