Russia says it is waiting for arms control proposals from US

ISTANBUL

Russia is waiting for proposals from Washington with regards to arms control, the Kremlin said on Monday, in response to National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan’s statement that the US is ready for dialogue on the matter.

“Of course, we expect that it will be backed up by de facto moves through diplomatic channels. And, after that, it will be possible to look at the proposed formats for dialogue. Russia remains open to dialogue … but we need to first understand how this proposal is worded,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told a press briefing in Moscow.

He described Sullivan’s statement as “important and positive,” but added that it is “difficult to be guided by statements in the media, especially when we are experiencing an acute deficit of mutual trust in our bilateral relations.”

Sullivan on Friday told the annual meeting of the Arms Control Association that the US was ready for arms control dialogue with Russia and China without preliminary conditions.
