Russia and Myanmar signed an intergovernmental agreement to cooperate in the peaceful use of nuclear energy, Rosatom announced in a statement on Wednesday.
The agreement was signed by Aleksey Likhachev, the director-general of Rosatom, and Myo Thein Kyaw, Myanmar’s minister of science and technology, at a ceremony held in Yangon, Myanmar.
‘The signing of the intergovernmental agreement constitutes an important step in the development of cooperation between Russia and Myanmar on the use of nuclear technologies,’ the company said.
Within the framework of the agreement, the parties will cooperate on the implementation of small nuclear power plants.
‘The establishment of a new industry in the country will undoubtedly benefit Myanmar’s energy sector, industry and economy,’ Likhachev was quoted as saying.
He emphasized that nuclear power provides a continuous and reliable source of clean energy at a stable price and that the introduction of nuclear technologies means that science, education, and training of highly qualified personnel will be greatly accelerated.
‘We appreciate Myanmar’s preference for Russian nuclear technology,’ he added.
