ANKARA (AA) – Italian football club Roma on Tuesday dismissed famous head coach Jose Mourinho.

“AS Roma can confirm that Jose Mourinho and his coaching staff will leave the club with immediate effect,” the club statement read.

“We would like to thank Jose on behalf of all of us at AS Roma for his passion and efforts since his arrival at the club,” Dan and Ryan Friedkin, club owners, said.

“We will always have great memories of his tenure at Roma, but we believe that an immediate change is in the best interests of the club,” they said, wishing Mourinho the best in his career.

Roma appointed Mourinho in May 2021.

During his term, Roma won the 2022 UEFA Europa Conference League and reached the Europa League final last season.

Mourinho’s Roma have 29 points in 20 matches, placing them ninth in Italy’s top-tier league Serie A led by Inter Milan, who have 51 points.

Mourinho has previously coached Portugal’s Porto, England’s Chelsea, Manchester United, and Tottenham Hotspur, Italy’s Inter Milan, and Spain’s Real Madrid.

The 60-year-old Portuguese national won the top-flight UEFA Champions League twice, with Porto in 2004 and Inter in 2010.

Mourinho claimed local titles with Porto, Chelsea, Inter and Real Madrid.

He also won the 2017 UEFA Europa League trophy while managing Manchester United.
