Retail sales volume down in EU, eurozone

The retail sales volume decreased by 1% in the euro area and 1.2% in the EU in July on a yearly basis, according to Eurostat.

According to the data, the volume of retail trade was down by 3.4% for automotive fuels, and 2.2% for food, drinks and tobacco in the euro area over the same period.

Meanwhile, retail sales volume was up by 1.1% for non-food products.

“In the EU, the retail trade volume decreased by 3.9% for automotive fuels and by 2.4% for food, drinks and tobacco, while it grew by 0.7% for non-food products,” Eurostat added.

Among member states, the largest yearly decreases were registered in Slovenia (minus 16.3%), Estonia (minus 8.6%) and Hungary (minus 7.6%), while Spain (8.6%), Greek Cypriot administration (8.0%) and Luxembourg (6.9%) posted the highest increases.

On a monthly basis, the volume of retail trade decreased by 0.2% in the euro area and by 0.3% in the EU, compared with June 2023.
