Red Bull’s Max Verstappen won the Mexico City Grand Prix on Sunday to bag a record 16th victory in the 2023 Formula 1 season.
Verstappen, who has already won the 2023 title after a sprint race in Qatar earlier in October, broke his own record that he set in 2022.
The Dutch driver secured the Formula 1 title for the third year in a row. Last year, the 26-year-old bagged 15 wins.
On Sunday at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, Verstappen won the 71-lap race with a time of 49 minutes and 23.531 seconds.
The race was restarted after Haas racer Kevin Magnussen suffered a heavy crash in the 33rd lap. Magnussen hit barriers and his car burst into flames. The Danish racer left the car immediately.
Mercedes’ British driver Lewis Hamilton was 13.875 seconds behind Verstappen to finish second.
Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc from Monaco came third in Mexico.
Formula 1 will travel to Sao Paulo, Brazil for the next race, the Round 21, on Nov. 5.
The 23-round season will end with the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix on Nov. 26.
