Real Madrid’s president on Thursday announced that they received the decision of the Court of Justice of the European Union on the breakaway Super League “with tremendous satisfaction.”

“Real Madrid receives the decision adopted by the Court of Justice of the European Union, the body charged with upholding out principles, values and liberties, with tremendous satisfaction,” Florentino Perez said in a statement.

“Today’s court decision is of enormous historical significance, highlighting two key findings. Firstly, European club football will no longer be a monopoly. And secondly, all clubs will now decide for themselves what to do next,” Perez said.

“Ultimately, today has been another triumph for a Europe of freedom, and for football and its fans,” the 76-year-old added.

Earlier Thursday, the court ruled that FIFA and the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) rules on prior approval of interclub football competitions, such as the Super League in 2021, are contrary to the EU law.

The European Super League was initially launched with 12 founding members – Real Madrid Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, AC Milan, Inter Milan, Juventus, Atletico Madrid and Barcelona.

FIFA and the UEFA objected to the project and threatened to impose sanctions on clubs and players who might decide to participate in the Super League.
