Real Madrid midfielder Eduardo Camavinga tore a knee ligament during a training session with the French national team, his club announced on Friday.

“Following tests carried out today on our player Eduardo Camavinga by the Real Madrid medical services, it has been diagnosed that he has torn the lateral collateral ligament in his right knee,” Spanish football powerhouse Real Madrid said in a statement.

Camavinga, 21, collided with his France teammate Ousmane Dembele in a training this week. France head coach Didier Deschamps then called up Khephren Thuram to replace Camavinga for national duty.

On Saturday, France will host underdogs Gibraltar in a UEFA EURO 2024 qualifying group match in Nice. Group B leaders France won all their six matches to already book their place at next summer’s European championship in Germany.

One of the promising players in Europe, Camavinga joined Real Madrid from French club Rennes in 2021 to win a Spanish La Liga, UEFA Champions League and a UEFA Super Cup in 2022.

He was a France midfielder when Les Bleus took silver medal at the 2022 FIFA World Cup held in Qatar last winter.

Last week Camavinga inked a new contract with Real Madrid until 2029 and played 17 matches for the Whites this season.
