ISTANBUL
Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Serbian counterpart Aleksandar Vucic spoke over phone to discuss strengthening their strategic partnership, energy cooperation, and regional political matters, according to the Russia’s Foreign Ministry on Friday.
During the call, both leaders emphasized “the strategic partnership, which is based on the spiritual, cultural and historical ties” between the two countries.
Vucic confirmed his attendance at Moscow’s celebration of the 80th anniversary of the Soviet victory in World War II and announced that a Serbian military unit would participate in the May 9 parade.
The discussion also covered practical areas of cooperation, with a particular focus on the energy sector.
Putin voiced opposition to any interference in Serbia’s internal affairs and expressed support for the country’s legitimately elected government.
He took the opportunity to congratulate Vucic on his recent 55th birthday, and both leaders agreed to continue contacts at various levels.
Serbia maintains close ties with Russia despite European efforts to align Belgrade with Western policies, particularly in the context of the Ukraine conflict and regional tensions.
